Why Boardsports?

We are a passionate, dedicated team of instructors and gear specialists with over 30+ years of collective riding, teaching and technical experience. Your goals become our shared goals. We will join you in your quest to learn windsurfing, kiteboarding or stand up paddle boarding. We will help you to improve your riding skills as you progress in each sport. We will help you to get the best and most appropriate equipment for your riding level, budget, and style.

Our instructors are driven by their passion to teach and provide a safe and fun atmosphere, making it easy for you to both learn and progress. In addition to industry certifications, all of our team instructor staff go through rigorous Boardsports training and certification. This training adds a whole new level of hands-on, practical teaching techniques for different learning styles.

How did we get started?

For 15+ years, Jane and I climbed the corporate ladders of our respective jobs. We both enjoyed the work we did, but we also longed for something more rewarding. In 2002, Jane got inspired to host an event that would get more women introduced to windsurfing and kiteboarding.

Typically, few women participated in these sports because they had the misconception that you needed a lot of upper body strength to participate (which is not true). Jane called around to all the local schools and shops to find a good place to host a beginner friendly event. She approached the original Boardsports – the first and longest running windsurfing and kiteboarding school in the bay area and one of the oldest in the country - to see if they would be willing to host a free intro to windsurfing/kiteboarding day at their world-renouned, beginner friendly, Alameda location. They said yes! Lex Sinclair was the lead instructor and helped us to host an awesome and totally free introduction to windsurfing and kitesurfing event in Alameda at the ideal beginner friendly Crown Beach. This event led to over 100 women learning the basics of windsurfing/kiteboarding in a day!

Inspired by the success of this event and the love of teaching/presenting, Jane and I quit our corporate jobs to run Boardsports windsurfing/kiteboarding School & Shop. After the first summer of teaching, we knew we had found our true passion – helping others get hooked on water sports. In 2006 we bought the school from the original "Boardsports" and started selling gear. In 2007 we expanded to a 2nd location in San Mateo, the former home of ASD Windsurfing/Kiteboard Shop. In 2008, we were the first school to offer stand up paddle boarding rentals and lessons. We have not looked back since, and our passion for what we do continues to grow every lesson!
