Why Improve Your Kiteboarding Skills with Boardsports?

Boardsports School & Shop has been teaching beginner lessons every season since 2002. We enjoy exclusive teaching rights at 2 of the best beach locations in the Bay Area - Crown Beach Alameda and Coyote Point Park in San Mateo. We have side on shore winds, long sandy beaches, and shallow warm water. Learn at these two ideal beginner and intermediate locations where you will come back to practice on your own. We also offer a full retail shop and can outfit you with all of the gear including board, kite, bar/lines, harness, accessories, and wetsuit.

We have many instructors working with us and are always hiring new ones! Our instructors are certified by the International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) and the Professional Air Sports Association (PASA).

INTERMEDIATE LESSONS

BOARD SKILLS

WATERSTARTS, RIDING UPWIND, TRANSITIONS, JUMPING

Either you just finished your land and water lesson with us and want more time to work on board skills, or you took lessons elsewhere and did not have time to get to the board. We will review how to get onto the board (waterstart) and what to do once you succeed.

Water-starting review - getting up on the board and staying up for a consistent ride

Practice your waterstarts and master the timing of pointing the board down wind while powering the kite to get up on the board.

Riding upwind: If you are further along with your board skills you can focus on proper edging, riding upwind, transitions, toe side carves, and toe side transitions.

Learn to properly edge against the pull of the kite and ride upwind.

Learning how to jump is a total thrill. That is when you will be hooked on the sport forever!

Pay online above to reserve your lesson. We will confirm your payment and lesson reservation within 24 hours. Spots are usually available for any future date. We sometimes are sold out the day before, so feel free to give us alternate dates in a "note to seller" if you pay/register last minute. Once you are paid and reserved for a lesson, we do not allow cancellations or offer any refunds. In the case of inclement weather or no wind, we will contact you to reschedule your lesson to another date.

BEACH SAFE - LAND SKILLS REFRESHER COURSE

This lesson is for students who have taken lessons in the past, and still don't feel comfortable launching or landing on their own or at a crowded beach. We focus on training you to be an independent kiteboarder with good beach etiquette and good safety knowledge. In this lesson we will review:

beach etiquette and managing a crowded beach

: Learn how to navigate a crowded beach so you can launch safely

bar safety systems

: Fully understand your bar's safety systems including chicken loop, kite leash, trim / depower system

rigging consistently and pre-flight check

: Learn how to know how much air to inflate into your kite so it performs properly

: Be sure to review all of your rigging, and do a thorough pre-flight check to make sure you rigged properly

self rescue procedure review

: Learn how to do a proper self rescue. Go through the steps on land to practice and solidify your skills

proper launching/landing skills

: Learn how to have the kite at the proper area of the kite wind window before you give the thumbs up to launch. Know both how to launch as a pilot, as well as how to give someone else a good launch to keep them safe.

: Utilize clear and proper hand signals while launching and landing

executing safety systems

: Go through a lunch and punch out your chicken loop (release your primary safety). Then with someone holding your kite, practice punching out your kite leash. Make sure you know how to reassemble parts easily.

Lesson Options:

Pre-Requisite: This is a refresher course for students who have had full land and water lessons previously. This is a great way to get back into kitesurfing if your lesson was a while back, and you want to review your land based skills before trying to go out on your own.

Cost:

$165 for 1 on 1 private 1 1/2 hr

$175 for 2 on 1 semi-private 2 hr

$220 for 1 on 1 private 2 hr
