Intermediate

Boardsports School enjoys exclusive teaching rights at 2 of the best beach locations in the Bay Area - Crown Beach Alameda and Coyote Point Park in San Mateo. We have side on shore winds, long sandy beaches, and shallow warm water. Learn at these two ideal beginner and intermediate locations where you will come back to practice on your own. We also offer a full retail shop and can outfit you with all of the gear: new or demo.

We have many instructors working with us! Our instructors are certified by US Sailing Windsurfing Instructor Program.

We recommend confident sailing in moderate winds and chop before progressing to this intermediate level.

BEACHSTARTING: By then end of this lesson, will understand how to control your board’s pointing direction by using the sail.   This will allow you to get the board pointed across the wind, step onto the board, and sail off – no more initial uphauling! 

HARNESS AND FOOTSTRAPS: By the end of this lesson, you will be comfortable wearing a harness and hooking into and out of your sail.  You will understand the fundamental steps of getting your feet into the foot straps.  You will also understand what causes “catapulting” and how to avoid it!   

WATERSTARTING: By the end of this lesson, you will know the secrets of setting up for a water start using little to know energy and how waterstart (have the sail pull you up out of the water rather than uphauling).  This is a stellar lesson for sail/board steering, efficient setup and reaching windsurfing nirvana :-).  

CARVING JIBE: By the end of this lesson, you will understand the fundamental steps for a fully planing, carving jibe. This technique will be broken down into the entry, the carve, the sail flip and the exit!  Let’s get you doing those “butter” jibes!!!

1:1 Private Intermediate Lessons: $90/hr.  2hr min.

2:1 Semi-Private Lessons: $70/person/hr.  2hr min.

Gear rentals are available.

All taught at Crown Beach Alameda or Coyote Point in San Mateo. Off Site lessons are available on request at Crissy Field, 3rd Avenue, Candlestick Park, Berkeley Marina, Sherman Island or your favorite sailing site.
